The history of the Australian Admiralty Jurisdiction

The Hon James Allsop AC and Professor Martin Davies in conversation

Join the Hon. James Allsop AC and Professor Martin Davies for an engaging discussion on the evolution of Australian maritime law, from its historical foundations to current practice and the opportunities and challenges of the future.   Drawing on their distinguished judicial and academic careers, the speakers will explore how admiralty law has developed over time, examine contemporary legal and commercial issues, consider how the field may continue to evolve in response to technological innovation, environmental pressures and changes in global trade.

This in-conversation style seminar brings together two internationally recognised leaders in maritime and admiralty law. The Hon. James Allsop, formerly Chief Justice of the Federal Court of Australia, is one of Australia’s most respected jurists and legal thinkers, while Professor Martin Davies is the Niels F. Johnson Chair in Maritime Law at Tulane University Law School in New Orleans. Together they offer rare comparative insights into where Australian maritime law has come from, and where it may be heading next.

The event will be held in-person at the Federal Court of Australia NSW Registry and livestreamed nationally. Moderated by Justice Sarah C Derrington, the discussion will take the form of a structured conversation, followed by an audience Q&A session. Attendees joining in person are invited to stay for networking drinks and canapes following the seminar.
