Adjustment to Federal Court of Australia Registrar Titles

25 February 2026

Recently, an internal review was conducted to simplify the range of titles used by Registrars of the Federal Court.

From Monday 2 March 2026, new titles will be applied as outlined below:

Previous TitleNew Title
New role Deputy Principal Registrar
National Judicial Registrar & District Registrar District Registrar (state/territory)
National Judicial Registrar – Appeals Senior Judicial Registrar – Appeals
National Judicial Registrar – Original Jurisdiction Senior Judicial Registrar – Original Jurisdiction
Senior National Judicial Registrar Senior Judicial Registrar
National Judicial Registrar Senior Judicial Registrar
Judicial Registrar Judicial Registrar
National Registrar Judicial Registrar

The change in titles does not affect the current roles or duties of Registrars in the Federal Court and parties should continue to refer to registrars in Court in the usual way (ie. using the title ‘Registrar’). Similarly, certain formalities, such as the form of a Registrar’s order, will not change.

If you have any queries regarding the above, please contact the Court via email (query@fedcourt.gov.au).
