Justice Amelia Wheatley was appointed to the Federal Court on 6 January 2025.

Justice Wheatley graduated from James Cook University with a Bachelor of Commerce (Accounting) in 1994 and a Bachelor of Laws (Hons) in 1998 from the Queensland University of Technology.  Her Honour also studied at the University of Queensland, graduating with a Master of Laws (with Dean’s commendation) in 2008.

Justice Wheatley was admitted as a legal practitioner to the Supreme Court of Queensland in 1999 and was an associate in the Federal Court and practised as a solicitor at Freehills (as it was then known), prior to practise as a barrister.

In 2005, she was called to the Bar in Queensland and was appointed Queen’s Counsel in 2019.

At the Bar Justice Wheatley specialised in revenue, migration, administrative law, commercial law, equity and trusts.

Prior to her appointment, her Honour was a Judge of the Supreme Court of Nauru on a special appointment in 2022.

Associateship applications

Justice Wheatley has appointed Associates for 2026 and 2027.

Associateship applications for commencement in 2028 will open in August 2026.

Applicants with one or more years post-admission experience, at the time of commencement, are preferred.

Applications should be in the form of a cover letter, a CV and a transcript of academic results. Applications should be sent to qldreg@fedcourt.gov.au, marked to the attention of the Chambers of Justice Wheatley.
