Justice Stewart is a graduate of the University of Natal (BA LLB cum laude) and the University of Oxford (BCL first class) where he was a Rhodes Scholar (Natal 1992). From 1996 to 2010, he practised at the Bar in South Africa, being appointed Senior Counsel there in 2006.
Justice Stewart practised at the Bar in Sydney from 2011 to February 2019, being appointed Senior Counsel for New South Wales in 2014. His practice at the Bar spanned public law and private law with particular specialisation in shipping and international trade, commercial disputes and international commercial arbitration. Justice Stewart was appointed a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (FCIArb) in 2014.
Associateship applications
Justice Stewart appoints two Associates, generally for a period of approximately 18 months each. His Honour plans for his associates to commence in January and June/July of each relevant year on a rolling basis.
His Honour currently has two vacant positions:
- One position commencing in June/July 2027 – applications for this position will close on 19 June 2026.
- One position commencing in January 2028 – applications for this position will close on 19 June 2026.
Applications should indicate which position(s) the candidate is interested in and which year and month the candidate would be available to commence.
Applications should include a covering letter of no more than one page, a brief curriculum vitae, university transcript(s) and the contact details of at least two referees.
His Honour seeks to appoint associates who have at least 1-2 years of post-admission experience in legal practice, although this is not an essential requirement. Candidates should also have an interest and/or experience in at least one of the following: admiralty & maritime law, international arbitration, private international law, or public law.
