Justice Halley was appointed to the Federal Court on 19 March 2021.

Justice Halley graduated from the University of Sydney with a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in 1983 and a Bachelor of Laws in 1985. Justice Halley was admitted as a legal practitioner in the Supreme Court of New South Wales in 1986 and began his career as a solicitor at Allen Allen & Hemsley from 1986 to 1992.

Justice Halley was called to the Bar in 1993 and was appointed as Senior Counsel in 2008. At the Bar, he specialised in competition, corporations and commercial law (including matters involving market power, merger clearances, price fixing, market manipulation, insider trading, abuse of breaches of directors’ duties and continuous disclosure obligations). Justice Halley was also a member of the NSW Bar Association’s Professional Conduct Committee from 2008 to 2015.

Associateship applications

Justice Halley appoints two Associates, generally for a period of 12 to 18 months each.

The next vacant positions will commence in September 2027 and November 2027. Justice Halley invites interested persons to apply by 31 May 2026 for the Associate positions commencing in both September 2027 and November 2027.

Applications should indicate which year and month the candidate would like to commence and include a cover letter of no more than one page, a brief curriculum vitae, university transcript and the details of at least two referees.
