Justice Downes was appointed to the Federal Court on 2 August 2021.
Justice Downes graduated from the Queensland University of Technology with a Bachelor of Laws (Hons) in 1991 and with a Bachelor of Civil Law (Hons) from the University of Oxford in 1993.
Justice Downes was admitted as a Barrister in the Supreme Court of Queensland in 1992 and was appointed as Senior Counsel in 2008, with the position transitioning to Queen’s Counsel in 2013.
While at the bar, Justice Downes specialised in commercial practice and has particular experience in contractual disputes, insolvency-related disputes, banking law, mining law, company law, joint venture disputes, construction disputes and intellectual property matters.
Her Honour is now taking applications for the 2024 positions.

Associates will ideally hold (or be on course to attain) First Class Honours in Law. It would be a further advantage to have completed a post-graduate degree in Law or have experience as an Associate to a superior court judge.
