  • Alison Legge, Senior National Judicial Registrar and National Operations Registrar

    We are pleased to announce that Alison Legge has been appointed as a Senior National Judicial Registrar and National Operations Registrar at the Federal Court of Australia.

    Ms Legge has over 30 years’ experience as a senior commercial litigator and has extensive experience in complex commercial litigation and in class actions. Prior to commencing with the Court, Ms Legge was at Herbert Smith Freehills where she was a Partner from 1992 until 1996.

    In her role at the Court, Ms Legge will play a critical leadership role particularly in relation to the ongoing implementation of national arrangements for legal operations. Ms Legge will undertake a diverse range of high level legal work across the Court’s national practice areas, including conducting complex mediations and case management in support of judges, and will perform delegated judicial functions including in the area of corporations law, presiding in Court over winding up and other corporations insolvency cases. Ms Legge will also play a key role in the strategic review and development of the Court’s policy and practice.

    Ms Legge commenced with the Court on 1 February 2021 and is based in Melbourne.


  • Christian Carney, Judicial Registrar – Migration

    We are pleased to announce that Christian Carney has been appointed as a Judicial Registrar – Migration at the Federal Court of Australia.

    In his role as a Judicial Registrar – Migration, he will provide case management support to judges in relation to migration applications; support the development of migration resources, policy and practice; and engage with key internal and external stakeholders in relation to the migration jurisdiction.

    Mr Carney has over 20 years’ experience in migration law. Prior to commencing with the Court, Mr Carney worked with Allens, Refugee Advice & Casework Services (RACS), and Legal Aid NSW in Sydney and with the UNHCR in Mannar, Sri Lanka. From 2012 to 2017 he was a Tribunal Member with the Migration and Refugee Division (MRD) of the Administrative Appeals Tribunal (AAT) (and MRT and RRT prior to amalgamation). From 2017 to 2021, he was appointed as a board member to the Torture Claims Appeal Board and as an Adjudicator with the Non-refoulement Claims Petition Board in Hong Kong.

    Mr Carney commenced with the Court on 27 January 2021 and is based in Melbourne.


  • Coenraad van der Westhuizen, Judicial Registrar – Migration

    We are pleased to announce that Coenraad van der Westhuizen has been appointed as a Judicial Registrar – Migration at the Federal Court of Australia.

    In his role as a Judicial Registrar – Migration, he will provide case management support to judges in relation to migration applications; support the development of migration resources, policy and practice; and engage with key internal and external stakeholders in relation to the migration jurisdiction.

    Mr Van der Westhuizen is a LIV Accredited Specialist in Immigration Law who has been working in the area of migration law since 2014. Prior to his commencement at the Court, he worked in the government and administrative law team first at DLA Piper and subsequently at Mills Oakley, where he acted for the Department of Home Affairs in migration litigation. Between 2014 and 2018 he worked at Erskine Rodan and WLW Migration Lawyers in Melbourne and at Irish Bentley in Brisbane, where he acted for applicants in a broad range of migration matters.

    Mr Van der Westhuizen commenced with the Court on 27 January 2021 and is based in Melbourne.
