Peter Michael Jacobson was appointed to the Federal Court on 17 June 2002. Prior to his appointment he was in practice as a barrister, practicing extensively in the fields of commercial law, equity and trade practices. He was admitted to the Bar of New South Wales in May 1979.

He graduated from the University of Sydney with a Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Laws (Hons). He obtained a Master of Laws from the University of Pennsylvania Law School in Philadelphia and was a member of the Faculty of Law at McGill University in Montreal before returning to Australia in 1976. He practiced as a solicitor from 1976 to 1979.
