Justice Yates was appointed to the Federal Court on 30 November 2009. 

His Honour graduated in law from the University of Sydney in 1977 and commenced practice as a solicitor that year after completing his practical legal training at the College of Law, St Leonards. He was called to the New South Wales Bar in 1982 and was appointed Senior Counsel in 1997. 

His Honour holds an additional appointment as a Deputy President of the Australian Competition Tribunal.

 

Associateship applications

Justice Yates invites interested persons to apply by 28 February in the year before the Associateship begins, e.g. 28 February 2018 for the position in 2019. Applications should take the form of a succinct cover letter, comprehensive CV and university transcript. Those applicants who are to be offered an interview will be informed by 31 March.
